We've had the big California NAMI Convention here in Orange County the last couple of days, so I have given extra thought to NAMI, the role it plays in Orange County, and the relationship with the Client Network. Many of the client advocates in Orange County were invited to participate in giving presentations, etc. I guess the us vs them question has been in my mind.
I guess the best way I can describe how I feel about this is the same way I feel when the county tells us how our Capital Facilities (etc) money is being spent. They sincerely believe they know what is best for us. It feels like they are our parents and can't let go. There is something demoralizing and enraging about that. Self-direction, choice, empowerment, respect, responsibility, and hope. Is there a reason why we have the Recovery Movement, the President's New Freedom Commission and the Mental Health Services Act?
